Ko, Hee - sung・Kim, Hey - souk This study aims to determine competence for multicultural education of teachers in charge of Korean language education in a multicultural so- ciety. As a multicultural education, Korean language education shall be able to make a contribution to increase ‘intercultural communicative com- petence’ of learners living in a multicultural society where communica- tion of members with a variety of cultural backgrounds is increased. For the foregoing, Korean language teachers, as ‘cultural organizers, cultural mediator, orchestrator of social contexts’, shall be equipped with ‘com- petence for multicultural education’ capable of performing Korean lan- guage education as multicultural education more effectively. Competence for multicultural education that Korean language teach- ers shall be equipped with is able to be confirmed through the elements of ‘knowledge, skill and attitude’ that comprise the aforementioned com- petence. First, Korean language teachers in charge of Korean language edu- cation as a multicultural education shall be equipped with ‘knowledge’ such as ‘knowledge of Korean subject, knowledge of various language cultures, knowledge of a variety of learners’ etc. Second, Korean language teachers in charge of Korean language education as a multicultural education shall be equipped with ‘skill’ such as ‘ability to reconstitute contents of education, ability to apply a variety of teaching-learning methods, ability to communicate with learners’ etc. Third, Korean language teachers in charge of Korean language edu- cation as a multicultural education shall be equipped with ‘attitude’ such as ‘attitude that respects various language cultures, attitude to consider of various learners, feeling of duty and efficacy with respect to teaching- learning of multiple cultures’ etc.
