Abstract
Lee Jinhyun, Oh Jieun This thesis proposes a direction for developing educational contents regarding the validity of language use. The perspective of valid language use addresses the relationship between language, power, and ideology. The validity of language use has been incorporated into Korean Language Education from the discourse of critical discourse analysis and critical language awareness, and the educational suggestion regarding valid language use has been continuosly made. Through a literature review, the limitations of previous studies were summarized into: (1) failing to explore various educational methods, exceedingly focusing on the application of the CDA(Critical Discourse Analysis) method, (2) overlooking the relationship between accuracy, appropriateness, and the validity of language, (3) viewing language as a reflection of society which led to overlooking language’s appeal to society and (4) limiting learners’ practice to text production. To complement these limitations, we suggested the (1) restoration of validity as a perspective on language, (2) attention to the overlap and interaction between the three perspectives, (3) recognition of the interaction between language and society, and (4) designing practice about language selection. The application of directions and examples of education content were shown on the honorifics system, as the issue of valid honorifics use has been continuously questioned and reconstructed by language users. This involves the issue of using honorifics based on status, occupation, age, and relationships etc.
