Oh Jungre · Kwon E-en This study analyzed the frequency and type of library books borrowed by first-grade elementary school students throughout an academic year. Students primarily borrowed comic series, while they favored picture books with fables, and complete fantasy books in the literature genre. In the information genre, they borrowed more books that compiled information on specific topics than books that presented processes. Female students borrowed more literature and written books than male students, whereas male students borrowed more information and comic books than female students. The findings reveal that students tend to choose only familiar and comfortable books, leading to problematic situations such as the overwhelming borrowing of comic series, trend of educational comics replacing information books, and significant influence of visual media on book selection. To address these issues, students must be encouraged through a variety of books in school libraries or classroom collections, and teachers should change their methods of selecting and exposing books.
