Abstract
Choi Sunhee · Park Hyejin This study aims to examine current educational practices related to the concept and term ‘modifying words.’ To achieve this, the study an- alyzed textbook content on ‘modifying words’ and conducted a focus group interview with elementary school teachers to explore challenges in teaching this concept. These challenges were categorized as follows: the “formal scope limitation” of modifying words, the “quantitative inad- equacy” of examples provided, and the “limitations of continuous and repetitive teaching and learning.” Based on these findings, this paper emphasizes that the educational objective for teaching modifying words should go beyond developing “grammatical awareness” and also focus on enhancing “expressive skills.”
