A Survey on Caregivers’ Perceptions and Needs Regarding Literacy Education for Lower Elementary School Students

Abstract
Kwon E En This study investigated the perceptions and needs of 300 caregivers lower elementary students regarding literacy education. The findings are summarized as follows. Most caregivers perceived that early literacy activities should be initiated before the students enter school. There was a discrepancy between the time at which caregivers preferred to begin Hangul instruction and the timeline set by the current curriculum. More than 40% of respondents reported not engaging in reading-aloud activities with their children during the preschool years. The most common home literacy activity was workbook exercises. Caregivers reported difficulties from limited understanding of literacy development and effective methods.
