Abstract
This paper deals with opposite and negative coherence relations. First, it gives a definition of ‘opposite coherence relations’, and deals with the meaning of ‘opposition’ and ‘negative’. And it analyzes the purport of opposition and negation. Then it prescribes the units of ‘relata’ and the forms of relata. Addressers represent their purport by ‘opposite and negative coherence relations. Opposition among relatum can be ‘opposite perspective’ that means ‘perspective shifting’. Negation forms to intend shifting the meaning and perspective clear the focus. Also they imply meanings to be presupposed in the culture of addresser’s groups or the individual. The unit of relatum is ‘phrase’ or ‘sentence’. Each of phrase, sentence or its sequences can be relatum. Some of conjunctions and connective endings represent the negative forms. And there are some combinations of an ending and a postposition or postpositions. Also some of negation words, postpositions and adverbs express the opposite coherence relations. These diverse forms represent the principles of using Korean to express negative coherence relations.
