Abstract
The argumentative dialogue in the public sphere of Joseon dynasty was a macro genre as social action in which various communication media and discourse types were compounded. It was a kind of problem solving activity in which various standpoints were presented. The disputant standpoints competed openly and one of them was decided as a policy. The discourse types such as sangso [上疏], sangchaja [上箚子], gye [啓], ui [議], gyo [敎], bidap [批答] and so forth were used in the argumentative dialogue in the public sphere. They dated back to Han dynasy of China and developed through the period of Goryeo and Joseon. It can be said that the genre conventions of the argumentative dialogue in the public sphere were inherited, developed, changed, and disappeared. It is suggested that the study on the argumentative dialogue in the public sphere should take such things into consideration: (1) the data basically should be considered as documents of social action(dialogue). So the social action should be reconstructed from the data. (2) In order to reconstruct the social action, the basic units of discourse analysis should be identified. (3) the genre conventions should be identified in the context of the argumentative dialogue. (4) the cultural characteristics of the genre should be interpreted on the basis of the reasonableness at that time. The result of generic approach to the argumentative dialogue in the public sphere of Joseon dynasty has educational value. The knowledge of traditional argumentation genre helps students to develop their cultural identity and an insight into the various human activities of persuasion.
