Creative expressions and conventional expressions are not on the opposite site. Bak Ji-one proposes an attitude for writing, Bupgochangshin(法古創新), that develops new writing styles by discovering originalities based on traditional writing styles. This paper aims at studying an application of Bupgochangshin(法古創新 : developing the originality from the tradition) by means of investigating the writing style of Hyeon Ki-young's short story, 「Keorukhan Saeng-ae(Sublime Lifetime)」 which succeeds to the Jun(傳) style as well as seeks diversities on the style. The characteristics of 「Keorukhan Saeng-ae」 could be summarized as below : (1) it includes a Cheju woman's whole life who had lived from the last part of Japanese invasion period to the Independent period, (2) it describes only history-related significant occasions as a condensed form, and (3) it minimizes the descriptions of the details. These characteristics prove that 「Keorukhan Saeng-ae」 succeeds to the Korean traditional narrative style, Jun(傳). However, it realizes distinctive aesthetic effects on the point that it makes a record of the Cheju people's life as a group, not of a personal life. Bupgochangshin is achieved through transformation of traditional styles. We can name it 'Transformation of function', an attempt to apply the traditional writing style with producing new aesthetic effects. The concept, 'Conversion of function' would provide a clue for analyzing the writing style to pursue the originality on the basis of traditions.
