This study examines the current trend of the childrens books in Korea and looks out for its alternatives for the children from an educational point of view. The characteristics of the recently published childrens books are as follows: first of all, the domination of the creative fairy stories and study-books over the childrens book market draws our attention. Secondly, the cartoon genre in the childrens books shows its rapid growth and, as a consequence, a lot of less or unqualified cartoon books are over-published. Lastly, a lot of childrens books are produced as a revised or abridged form along with other childrens books for the educational information. Regarding the last tendency, it is more desirable to write the originally children-targeted books rather than merely to summarize the previously published stories for the adults. It is also more advisable to make a complete translation of the worlds best pieces into Korean rather than to extract several separate parts from the whole story. Nowadays we have gradually a lot of fully translated books of world best stories. The books we have read in childhood can give very deep influences on the way of developing our thoughts and ideas. For this reason, it is said that the reading experience in childhood determines childrens future as it is a first impressive experience to them. From this point of view, I suggest several alternatives on how to guide the childrens books from an educational sense. At first, it is essential to select the books with priority to their original texts and then to make good reading plans for the children with due regard to their ages and growth steps. Also it is necessary to avert our ideas from a functional emphasis on the reading education to the way to let children appreciate their own delight toward literature. A well-organized and intimate cooperation of school, household and society will be required for a better result on this matter.
