Abstract
Writing in teaching Korean as a foreign language (TKFL) is becoming increasingly more important, and so is its evaluation which has a significant influence on all the process of teaching writing. Teaching writing including the assessment of writing in TKFL, however, has not yet been systematized for writing has been regarded as a subordinate skill, that supports and verifies the acquisition of other skills.
This essay argues that 'the systematization of evaluation' is the key method for improving the writing ability of KFL-learners. Its focus is on the assessment of text-producing ability that was investigated from various perspectives. The contents and methods of its assessment are explored and the possible application of the study is presented.
It's natural that the contents and methods of assessment should vary according to the educational conditions. However, the assessment program for writing in TKFL must be improved at least in the following: 1) The proportion of genuine writing tasks should be increased. 2) Analytic scales should be developed and used diversely. 3) Alternative assessment ways should be discussed and adopted.
