Abstract
I study on German national language education in its history, operating system, scientific status, tendency of research, curriculums, textbooks, and classroom teachings. As a result of this study, I suggest some issues that have to be urgently discussed for Korean national language education. Historically, main focuses of German national language education transfer from racial ideology to communication abilities, and now, it is on integrative teaching theories. In influence of the theories, curriculum is composed of three areas : 'expression', 'comprehension', and 'knowledge of the language', and involves themes for integrative teaching. Textbooks are governed by the curriculum, and influenced by teaching method theories. A main idea of composing chapters for Grundschule is thematic, but for Gymnasium is generic. Classroom teaching is wholly controlled by teachers, who compose teaching materials for themselves instead of textbooks. As a result of this study, I discuss on issues : how can we make a model for integrative curriculum and textbooks, how can we manage several kinds of textbooks, how can we control interactions between the central governed and teachers's self-regulating education systems, and how necessary is subject matter education in pre-teacher education courses.
