Current Issues and Several Suggestions Regarding the 7th National Curriculum and KLE

Abstract

The 7th national Korean language curriculum, so-called 'Differentiated and Individualized Curriculum', has begun to apply to schools from 2000 in Korea. From that time on, lots of researchers has pointed out it's problems and issues concerning the condition of teaching and learning. The purpose of this paper is to investigate and point out the issues and problems of the 7th curriculum, which will be a good chance to modify the curriculum or develop a new one. As a result, there are many issues and problems in the 7th curriculum, which was not intended at the starting point. First of all the conditions for the curriculum is not sufficient to implement the differentiated and individualized curriculum both in primary and secondary schools. It will be the most effective solution to modify largely the curriculum, which needs to consider the levels, quantities, time for task-solution, depth of thinking. In that case, we need to reach a consensus for some standards of achievement level for every grades. At the moment, it is not easy to teach students with grouping by 2 or 3 levels such as basic, advanced and supplementary course in a class. Instead of that, it will be more reasonable for school, teachers and students to choose 'basic+ advanced' or 'base+supplementary' model. Also, for this, much more teaching materials should be developed so that schools, teachers and students could choose a appropriate book for their condition and levels.
