Jang, Bong - Gee The purpose of this study is to describe the importance of applying multiple validation procedures to translating and using motivation instruments in literacy research. I reviewed highly recommended methodological approaches to translation and cross-cultural validation of research instruments and established an eight-step guideline. This guideline includes multiple validation procedures such as seeking conceptual definition, using forward/backward translation processes, adopting group translation methods, conducting cognitive interviews and focus groups, encouraging written feedback on the survey, and using feedback on items from experts. This guideline was used to evaluate literacy motivation instruments translated from English into Korean language. Results showed that Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) was translated most frequently by four researchers and was identified as the most widely used motivation measure in literacy research in Korea. Cognitive interviews, focus groups, and back translation were often not conducted and this lack of methodological rigor created some major issues in validity and reliability of those translated instruments. Considering the increasing numbers of motivation studies in literacy, this study contributes to understanding methodological sensitivity and complexity in translating and validating motivation instruments.
