Abstract
This essay purposes to share awareness of problems involved with the research methodologies in the science of Korean education. It has both universality and specialty. The former is related to the fact that its object is a human being and the latter means that its main concern is the (national) language use ability. So it is necessary to consider such elements as human being, national language, education, and system before we explore and develop the research methodologies. The history of research has gone along with the researcher's awareness of the problems. In retrospection of the last three decades, we can see such trends. In the 1970's, surveys or quantitative researches were conducted on the basis of measuring and making questionnaires with the recognition of the identity of the science of Korean education. In the 1980's, researches based on literature review were the main streams, which reflected their eager for theories. The first half of the 1990's could be characterized as the period that schools became understood as fields of research and practice. And we experienced the advance of qualitative researches during the second half. The research methods should not be uniformed but be approved by the researchers involved, because the selection of them is subordinate to the objective of the research. The superiority and competitiveness of the science of Korean education is absolutely depends on the level of the awareness of the problem, the method to resolve it, researchers, and environments. Now it is most important time for researchers of the science of Korean education to explore and develop their own methodologies for its academic level up.
