This paper grew out of the question like this: Can the sociological perspectives apply to the study of Korean language and literature education, and if possible, how? Among the various paradigms in sociology of education, I chose the perspective and methodology of qualitative studies, because I thought the most urgent thing in our studies is to get the truthful description and interpretation on the reality in our classroom. Undoubtedly, this project needs a lot of survey of the magnitude and scope. So I had to satisfy just by showing the possibilities and significances of qualitative studies in our discipline. Firstly, I proposed that we apply the methods of qualitative studies to our studies, including the cultural ethnography and many phenomenological researches. Secondly, I hoped that, as many researchers of qualitative studies get confronted with the difficulties in writing their observation and interpretation with verisimilitude and efficiency, we contribute to other disciplines by suggesting the models in writing because we have a good many resources and traditions not only in language and literature but also in sociolinguistics and literary criticism which gives us a phenomenological insight of human mind and behavior. That's why I tried to put my topics in various ways in this paper.
