English is the common language in Australia, although Australia is composed of multi-cultural nationalities. Therefore it is the task of Australian English education to ensure that students are able to use Australian English appropriately. For the introduction and analysis of Australian English education, I choose English 10 written by Kathy MaLean. This book offers well-planned and thoughtful, structured activities in a format informed by national agreement on a Statement and Profile for English. All aspects of content of English as defined in the Statement on English for Australian Schools-texts, contextual understanding, linguistic structures and features, and strategies-are comprehensively dealt with in engaging and down-to-earth activities and exercises. The book has been designed to incorporate materials on all the language modes-speaking, listening, reading, viewing and writing-and a range of texts and text types. This ensures that students read, view and write texts ranging from classical literatures to sitcoms, from feature films to sonnets. Each chapter also challenges students to consider links between their lives and those portrayed in the texts they read, view and listen to, through thematic focuses such as being a consumer, preparing to leave school, reading and viewing classical literatures, and exploring patriotism. Important features of the textbook include: It is designed for students of all ability and achievement levels, with two sets of extension activities in each chapter to extend the more able student. It has a variety of easily accessible activities, some of which can be used independently(e.g. for homework exercises) but all of which are linked thematically or linguistically. The clear and structured activities and exercises encourage independent learning without excessive reliance on teacher direction.
