The films have been influenced by literarture since the cinema was invented late in 19th century. Especially, novels in 19th century had a great effect on the early films as far as concerned a narrative. Both novel and the films have a narrative. The narrative is composed of story and discourse. Discourse is the way in which a story is communicated. According to the recent studies of narratology, there are a lot of similarities between novels and the films in respect of a narrative. Chatman argued that not only novels but also the films have the elements of discourse such as an 'implied author' and a 'narrator'. He presented the films narrated by the 'unliable narrator' as a ground. In this respect, it is possible that a film is said to be a literary text in an extensive sense. In literary education, it is an intrinsic goal to improve student's literary competence. As cultural environment is changed by diverse media, the extent of literary competence must be enlarged. 'Narrative literacy' can be suggested as the essential element of literary competence. It is the ability with which students are able to understand the narrative of various texts and create original narrative. It is useful for narrative literacy to 'read' and 'write' the films. The films must be ragarded as a useful text in education of literature, furthermore as a literary text itself.
