For teaching Korean literary works makes culture education more effective than fragmentary knowledge and information. There are various levels to teaching literature to foreign students from using literary works as a source of language education to teaching literature specially. Multi-level meanings, the characteristics of literary language make it possible to understand the society where target language is used by implicating various cultural values and reflecting a society profoundly.
In this article, culture education model is designed by three literary education models. Basic culture model is taught from the basic level to understand a society which is described in the literary work to advanced level to understand historical lineage and cultural heritage. Language model is taught from studying basic words and phrases to understanding historical background, views of world and philosophy through specific style of writing. Cultural involvement model is taught by relating personal experiences and the subjects of the tests.
This article shows the necessity of teaching Korean through classic literary works. Literary works are not only materials for language education to communicate but also materials for culture education to develop cultural understanding. This article indicate the necessity and values to teach Korean culture through classic literary works and especially, presents SiJo and fairy tales as specific sample teaching-studying methods.
