Abstract
The present study discusses language awareness and the educational responses to it in a highly specialized society . For this author, the problem of language awareness arises from both the inequality of knowledge and the crisis of communication that has its origins in an age of information and mass production of specialized discourse. The former is related to communication among specialists and the latter between specialists and non-specialists. In order to resolve these issues, the author classifies the specialized areas into seven categories: management; science, information and engineering; health, social welfare, and religion; education; law and governance; business and finance; and culture, art, and sports. In addition, he describes language awareness through each of these categories and argues that critical language awareness is necessary for communication between specialists and non-specialists. Finally, he discusses the educational tasks required to resolve problems, such as a more functional approach to language and school grammar, the cultivation of discourse among specialists, the reconstruction of various special discourses for non-specialists, and a more critical approach to discourse analysis and language awareness.
