A Study on Conceptualization of the Korean Language Teachers’ Competence for Multicultural Education

Abstract
This study aims to determine competence for multicultural educationof teachers in charge of Korean language education in a multicultural society. As a multicultural education, Korean language education shall beable to make a contribution to increase ‘intercultural communicative competence’of learners living in a multicultural society where communicationof members with a variety of cultural backgrounds is increased. Forthe foregoing, Korean language teachers, as ‘cultural organizers, culturalmediator, orchestrator of social contexts’, shall be equipped with ‘competencefor multicultural education’ capable of performing Korean languageeducation as multicultural education more effectively. Competence for multicultural education that Korean language teachersshall be equipped with is able to be confirmed through the elementsof ‘knowledge, skill and attitude’ that comprise the aforementioned competence. First, Korean language teachers in charge of Korean language educationas a multicultural education shall be equipped with ‘knowledge’such as ‘knowledge of Korean subject, knowledge of various languagecultures, knowledge of a variety of learners’ etc. Second, Korean language teachers in charge of Korean languageeducation as a multicultural education shall be equipped with ‘skill’ suchas ‘ability to reconstitute contents of education, ability to apply a varietyof teaching-learning methods, ability to communicate with learners’ etc. Third, Korean language teachers in charge of Korean language education as a multicultural education shall be equipped with ‘attitude’ suchas ‘attitude that respects various language cultures, attitude to considerof various learners, feeling of duty and efficacy with respect to teachinglearningof multiple cultures’ etc.
