Translation and Validation of Motivation Instruments in Literacy Research: Trends and Issues

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to describe the importance of applyingmultiple validation procedures to translating and using motivation instrumentsin literacy research. I reviewed highly recommended methodologicalapproaches to translation and cross-cultural validation of researchinstruments and established an eight-step guideline. This guideline includesmultiple validation procedures such as seeking conceptual definition,using forward/backward translation processes, adopting grouptranslation methods, conducting cognitive interviews and focus groups,encouraging written feedback on the survey, and using feedback onitems from experts. This guideline was used to evaluate literacy motivation instrumentstranslated from English into Korean language. Results showed that Motivationfor Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) was translated most frequentlyby four researchers and was identified as the most widely used motivationmeasure in literacy research in Korea. Cognitive interviews, focusgroups, and back translation were often not conducted and this lack ofmethodological rigor created some major issues in validity and reliabilityof those translated instruments. Considering the increasing numbersof motivation studies in literacy, this study contributes to understandingmethodological sensitivity and complexity in translating and validatingmotivation instruments.
