Abstract
This study conducted a survey for 194 middle school teachers and 435 students to evaluate the main texts of each unit in Korean language textbooks. Major findings of this study are presented below. First, in the readers factor, there was a difference between teachers’ and students’ attitude toward language arts curriculum, educational contents, and texts. Teachers emphasized value education, and preferred teaching literature, grammar and the core genres. Students, on the contrary, stressed studying for tests and preferred reading, speaking-listening, and narrative genres. Second, in the text factors, interest of teachers and students in the descriptive texts, which were dominant in textbooks, were very low. Material texts such as expository, persuasive, and literary texts also did not appeal to students. There was a need for a study on descriptive and material texts, and the users’ responds to the textbook texts.
