Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effects of empathic tendency on selection of sources during college freshmen’s writing from sources. For this purpose, data were collected from 60 college freshmen. Further, quantitative analysis by sub-areas of Interpersonal Reaction Index(IRI)(Davis, 1980) was employed to evaluate the correlation between the writer’s empathic tendency and his own selection of source texts. The results were as follows. First, there was a higher correlation between the “Perspective-taking” score and the relation of selected source texts, the source, the proportion of using rebuttal argumentation and the audience awareness overall. Second, The significant correlation has been found between the emotional factors of empathic tendency such as “Empathic Concern” & “Personal Distress” and T-units of the information oriented from source texts disagreeing with the writer’s own view on the topic. Third, the controversies over “Fantasy” and “Personal Distress” have been found the same as those from previous papers. Fourth, There wasn’t any statistically significant correlation between empathic tendency score and the ratio of writer-oriented information to text-oriented information.
