Abstract
An Hyowon This study originated from critical concerns in the field that educational content on ‘basic sentence patterns’ in elementary grammar is too difficult for third-grade learners and lacks clear learning objectives. The study analyzed problematic aspects of ‘basic sentence patterns’ from three perspectives: curricula and textbooks, learner comprehension, and teacher perceptions. The findings are as follows: First, the content is based on the linguistic concept of ‘sentence types (sentence patterns).’ Because of its high level of abstraction, elementary learners face significant challenges in understanding materials through terminology alone. Second, the study confirmed that classroom activities focus disproportionately on distinguishing verbs and adjectives rather than exploring sentence structure itself. Third, the connection between learning ‘sentence structure’ and developing reading and writing literacy needs to be established more concretely.
