A Method of Teaching Vocabulary with Computer Game

Abstract
Vocabulary teaching using computer games are based on the behaviorism theory and have been widely used in computer instructions. Vocabulary teaching using computer games have been popular because computer itself gives both high motivation to the students and visual and audio materials which are necessary to learn vocabulary. This thesis analyzed the current Korean Education using computer games and examined new method to improve Korean vocabulary competence using computer games. This thesis suggested three considerations of introducing computer games in terms of educational view. 1) Suggesting appropriate vocabulary list suit for learner's purpose and level 2) Considering the internal and external elements for game 3) Considering the diverse interactive between learner and computer Based on these considerations, Korean learners were divided according to the level : alphabet learning level, beginner, intermediate & advanced. Then the learning purpose and concrete games are suggested along the level of each learner. The purpose of level is as follows. 1) On the level of alphabet, students can discriminate vowels and consonants and understand the system of alphabet. 2) On the level of beginner, students can understand the meaning and sound of the verbs and nouns and search words in the dictionary 3) On the level of intermediate & advanced, students can speak and listen and understand various verb forms in short and long sentences. To make a successful CALL, it is necessary to apply syllabus study like vocabulary selection, arrangement and suggestion to the real school field.
