Abstract
New Directions for Teaching Korean in the Changing Media EnvironmentKim, Dae-haengThe addition of contents for media in the Curriculum of subject Korean marks the importance of the influence of changing environment in language life. It may also be a signal to examine the purposes, contents and methods of teaching Korean. It raises problems, too, as there are different assumptions concerning the point of view about language. The way of renewing of directions for the teaching Korean has to be found in the proper understanding about the nature and functions of language.This essay briefly defines the nature and functions of language and explores the main approaches to the teaching of subject Korean for the future. There is then an examination of the role of Korean and the model of Korean teaching suggested by the addition of the contents of media, and a definition of problems which are raised rather than solved by the revision of curriculum.For renewing of teaching subject Korean, the important points are as follows;a) general-improve the view of language, examine the division of the domains, put emphasis on the thought domain, organize the teaching contents regard to grades. b) contents-put emphasis on the significance of knowledge, stress on the thought process, intend personal growth through meaningful experiences, emphasize the attitudes for the personal subjectivity.c) methods-set up aims for humanistic education, develop cannonical teaching materials, instruct through the form of student-centered class, assess through students attitudes.
