The Perception of Reading and the Characteristics on the Reading Activity in Korean Secondary School

Abstract
This research intends to investigate the perception related to reading and the characteristics on the reading practices in Korean secondary schools through questionnaire. This research's subjects have 1,355 students in 12 secondary schools and 330 teachers in 15 secondary schools, their response is analyzed. As a result, this study found that: 1. The students shows a tendency to perceive the reading as the process of gaining the information and knowledge, but the teachers have a marked trend to regard the reading as the process of construct the meaning. 2. Students' rating the importance of reading is lower than teachers' rating, 3. It is common to students and teachers that reading has been regarded as a significance because it gives us lessons and wisdoms 4. Most students read mainly ordinary times more than special times such as weekend, holiday, and vacation. 5. Students have an inclination to read a sort of interesting stories and bestseller, but teachers have a tendency to recommend a kind of the greatest masterpieces and classics. 6. Students' reading motivation is well aroused when they heard about the content of a book. 7. Students are hindered in their reading due to TV and internet, want of time, and the lack of interest.
