The Current Situation and Controversial Issues of the Korean Language Textbook Policy

Abstract
Recently the national curriculum and the textbook policy have shown the rapid change. In order to expect the successful results of the change, there would be the preparation and efforts to be followed in the change. The present study aims to explore the direction of the textbook policy. In order to achieve the purpose, it conducted as follows:1) it identified the current situation and controversial issues of the Korean language textbook policy:2) it presented the new direction of the textbook policy and the solutions to be solved. The government intends to develop various textbooks with high quality. It has showed the outcomes to some degree. However, there is a need for more systematic and stable implementation of the textbook policy. It is also necessary for the government to seek plans to control the quality of the textbooks without restriction of autonomy and creativity of textbook developers. Korean language textbooks have been developed as government- copyrighted, government-authorized, and government-approved textbooks according to the change of the national curriculum and the textbook policy. They need to be differentiated depending on the internal rationale by establishing the principles of the categorization. Government-authorized textbooks are supposed to get authorization from the government after strict evaluation processes. The textbook authorization system has been improved so far;however, there should be more need for the improvement of the evaluation procedures, processes, and standards.
