Abstract
This essay focuses on the literary merits and the implications for the real world in ecological poetry, and suggests ways to discuss them effectively in classrooms. In doing so, this study seeks to criticize the environmental pollution and human alienation caused by dichotomous thinking about nature and humankind, thereby exploring the alternatives to improve human lifestyle. By learning about poetry with the exemplar works of ecological poetry, students will outgrow their passive attitude about the problems in the real world involving nature and humankind, and may experience shifts in their paradigms by engaging in active criticisms of the real world. Furthermore, students will be encouraged to seek solutions and alternatives by exploring ideals by forming new conceptions of nature and humankind beyond criticism. Learning ecological poetry will not only stimulate students’ aesthetic sensibilities, but may help to induce healthier, more positive changes in their attitudes and behavior by enabling them to think in critical, alternative ways.
