Abstract
The aim of this paper is to retrospect on the study of teaching-learning method in the literature classroom and to propose the new way of teaching literature. So, I have examined the dominant discourses in the study of literature teaching methodology and found that there have been three major strategies; workshop-based, textual property based, and textual activity based approaches. In a workshop based approach, there used be a mood like religious and ritual one in the classroom. Teacher-explanation oriented education has pushed most of students away from the pleasure of literature. In a textual property based approach, we can find the limitation of New Criticism. Students might learn that literature is something difficult for them to understand and to enjoy. Therefore many scholars suggest to throw them away from our literature classroom and adopt the teaching method based on students’ textual activities in order to enhance their literary textual power and to overcome the limits of New Criticism. I could agree on their suggestion entirely, but their distinction is not quite alright, because even the workshop based approach doesn’t always mean the teacher-explanation oriented teaching method. We should change the strategy to involve the so-called dialogism. And also in the case of textual property based instruction, we can empower our students to understand and enjoy the literary texts. The important thing is to make our students enjoy the activity itself to learn literary texts. To do so, we have to introduce constructivism into our classroom In text activity based approach, we can ask our students whether there might be any differences between ordinary speech and poetic language or not. Literature is just a kind of human activity with texts. Including literature, there are many literariness in the real life, especially found in the field of cultural life. We need let our students have cultural literacy. To achieve the goal, I suggest to teach literary texts based on intertextualities. It could be the best way to give our student to have textual powers and enjoy literature.
