Analysis of Suitability for Debate Discourse Material Text in Textbook —focused on argument construction and transaction aspect—

Abstract
This paper tried to assess whether debate discourse material text contained in textbooks qualifies and contributes to enhancing of debate competence for learners. Also, in the paper, it is discussed what matters when writing or including debate discourse material text. Debate discourse material text should be able to deliver aspects of argument construction and transaction as intrinsic attributes of debate discourse based on curriculum relevance, stereotype and requisite. However, debate discourse material text contained in ‘Korean language II’ textbook doesn’t have a strong foundation of argument. Further, it lacks transaction aspects including meaning negotiation, joinder of issue, balance of proof and disproof, etc. to prove rationality of assertion. It should be more careful when debate discourse material text is used in class. It is suggested that future debate discourse material text be written and included in textbooks with proper awareness of its essence, deliberate realization of transaction process of debate, mitigation of burden on text quantity of debate discourse, consideration of utilization of unfinished・deficient・single debate discourse material text. Suggestions made in this paper could be noted for materialization of standards of writing and selection of debate discourse material text. In addition, the author hope findings from the research would help provide a foundation for speaking section material text and textbook writers in this regard.
