Abstract
This study reviews the National Curriculum (NC) of Korean Language as a second language which was announced publicly in July 2012. This NC can be valued in three respect; 1) It provides systematically-developed criterion to teach Korean language to students with multi-cultural backgrounds who have usually been neglected in schools. 2) It accommodates new agendas of education nationwide as well as worldwide. 3) It is an achievement within a very short period of time by government-driven projects. This NC also has 5 areas requiring revision in the future; 1) it is questionable to define Korean society as a multi-cultural society and not advisable to use a negative label of 'student with multi-cultural background'. It is also contradictory to include Korean language learners of L1 as well as L2 for targeted learners. 2) Although 'inter-cultural understanding' is very important learning objective, it doesn't provide relevant content and teaching methods. 3) Its way to structure and sequence the content need to be articulated in more sophisticated way. 4) To improve academic language capacity, it is necessary to provide the link between the content of subject matters (math, science, social studies, and so on) and the actual language learning. It also needs to establish how the cooperation between content teachers and language teachers can be achieved. 5) It also needs to provide a guide as to the use of the results of assessments in providing useful information to stake-holders.
