A Discussion on the Basis of Qualitative Research on Korean Language Competence Improvement for Returnees from Abroad

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine considerations for qualitative research on Korean language competence improvement of returnees from abroad. To this end, this study emphasizes the importance of restoration or enhancement of disconnected Korean language competence. In addition, this paper suggests that this goal will be maximized by qualitative research method. This assertion is based on the characteristics of qualitative research which minimizes simplification and limit set, tries to apprehend “as it is” as much as possible in the complicated context, and considers individual characteristics as intrinsic. Qualitative research, thus, is more interested in the world of participants than that of researchers, and this will ensure different backgrounds of returnees, therefore reflecting better individual language use. To maximize this strength of qualitative research, it is important to recognize prior considerations before conducting a study. This study also suggests clarifying research purpose and choosing concrete research methods which show the goal efficiently to make the most of qualitative research.
