Abstract
The aim of this study is to compare various Korean dialogues of Higher Level of textbooks, which is currently used in Korea, China, and the United States, by analyzing the aspects of speech communication abilities for the advanced Korean speaking learners. This research will examine “Yonsei Korean 6; 韩国语 4; Integrated Korean-Advanced Intermediate 1”. It analyzed and compared the level of proficiency, which is related to the skill for speaking and listening tasks, and the level of communication, which is close to language culture. In the aspect of its proficiency level, “Yonsei Korean” contains details of the various topics which construct effective face-to-face professional dialogue, interview, and public hearing etc. The most important part here is that the textbook takes full advantage of the conversation and tries to understand the meaning of it for learners, not to use the material for improving conversational skills. Meanwhile, “韩国语 4” mainly selects cultural issues, which is usually old and out of date. In contrast with other textbooks, we can know “Integrated Korean” shows verbal communication traits and provides rather natural dialogues if we examine closely: spoken grammar activities and exercises, the actual conversational situation, and relatively short length of utterance. Despite its merit, the only problem with this book is that the level of conversation is just suitable for beginners. Next, let’s compare them in terms of culture. Although “Yonsei Korean” shares a common relationship between the upper and lower classes like mother and daughter in law relationship, it does not represent the actual way of language usage in the cultural context. “韩国语 4” reflects Korean culture learning well: the showing of politeness toward others with courtesy and good remarks, family relationships and face. “Integrated Korean” introduces the usual humane communication culture. However, all the three of them rarely show high context culture and reserved expressions, which is the traditional culture of Korea.
