Abstract
This study aimed to derive a method to increase the cultural literacy of advanced Korean language learners using classic novels. To this end, an approach that encompasses the “Acceptance Model”, in which knowl- edge is transferred to advanced learners in the direction of increasing cultural literacy, and the “Sharing Model”, in which learners share knowl- edge and form culture, is taken. As a theoretical background, we focused on acquiring the value system of Korean culture from an acceptance model perspective and on enabling learners to learn Korean through dy- namic negotiation between their native culture and Korean culture from a shared model perspective. In addition, Ku-un-mong was selected as a work that comprehensively shows the surface and ideology of Korean culture without being confined to Confucian ideology, and an education- al method was sought to help learners interpret Korean culture, which has complex characteristics, and creates new meaning. The teaching prin- ciples included “acceptance and understanding of cultural knowledge”, “discovery, interpretation and negotiation of cultural perspectives”, and “cultural implementation and creation”. In the end, a teaching–learning method was proposed that moves from an acceptance model to a sharing model based on Ku-un-mong.
