A Study on Paragraph Writing of Elementary and Middle School Students and Teachers’ Perceptions on Paragraph Writing Education

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate paragraph writing of elementary and middle school students and to explore teachers’ perceptions of paragraph writing education. Also, this study aimed to find out effective educational teaching plans for paragraph writing. To attain the research goals, this study gathered the writing composition of 232 elementary and middle school students. Also, 236 elementary and middle school teachers answered the questionnaire on paragraph writing education. Results from the data of this study can be summarized as follows. First, most of students were deficient in their paragraph writing composition. Second, teachers have already known the effectiveness of paragraph writing education and educational contents. However, they didn’t recognize the teaching method well. Also, they didn’t implement paragraph writing education sufficiently in class. This study suggested that paragraph writing should be included in writing educational contents. In addition to, instructors should educate their students on paragraph writing consistently. For meaningful education, teacher training programs focusing on writing practice should be designed to help instructors develop their teaching skills on paragraph writing.
