Abstract
Korean language education has included language norms in the curriculum and taught it to students steadily. However, there are limits in responding to the language phenomena encountered in daily life only through the education provided in the formal curriculum. In this paper, I found that there is a gap between the recognition of grammar and the actual usage of the language, particularly in the spelling of Hangeul, and confirmed the situation of Hangeul spelling education based on the curriculum and teachers’ perception. It was suggested that education regarding grammar norms and Hangeul spelling should be planned and executed in terms of lifelong education aimed at “an ever-growing being as a learner.” Therefore, the curriculum needs to be devised so as to emphasize education that cultivates the value or significance of the norm, the necessity of the norm, and a desirable attitude toward the norm, instead of education centering on individual provisions of the norm.
