A Narrative Inquiry into the Development of Korean Language Education — Korean Language Education and Korean Language Education Studies as Experienced by a Scholar

Abstract
This study presents a narrative-based, reflective analysis of Korean language education’s development as an academic field by drawing on the author’s more than four decades of experience as a teacher, researcher, and teacher educator. Rather than offering a personal memoir, it positions the researcher’s professional trajectory as analytical data through which the institutional formation, intellectual genealogy, and practical evolution of Korean language education can be examined. This study first characterizes the researcher as a narrative subject situated across multiple educational phases, including school teaching, national curriculum and textbook development, and university-based teacher education. It then traces Korean language education’s chronological ecology, focusing on the roles of teacher-training institutions, generational succession within research communities, and the co-evolution of adjacent academic domains. Furthermore, the study analyzes the major controversies in the field’s development, such as debates over the scope and identity of Korean language as a subject, curriculum organization, assessment systems, media education, and the relationship between Korean language education and related disciplines. Finally, this study reflects on the enduring values of and future challenges for Korean language education as a discipline. It emphasizes the need for academically grounded yet practically viable theories that can respond to changing linguistic, technological, and social conditions. By integrating narrative inquiry with macro-level disciplinary analysis, this study deepens our understanding of how Korean language education has evolved and how it may be re-envisioned for the next generation.
