한국어 교육의 역사는 한민족이 다른 민족과 교류하기 시작한 시점 에서 비롯된다고 보아야 할 것이다. 자료상으로 남은 역사만 보더라도 공식 교육기관에서 수행된 한국어 교육의 역사는 270년이 넘는다. 공식 교육기관에서의 외국어 수업은 대개 특정한 교재를 매개로 해 서 이루어진다. 오랜 역사를 가진 외국어로서의 한국어 교육에서도 교 재가 교사와 학습자를 매개해 왔고 수업에서 교재가 차지하는 비중은 지금도 매우 큰 상황이다. 한국어 교재 연구는 1970년대 초·중반을 시점으로 해서 80년대를 거쳐 조금씩 늘어났고, 90년대에 접어들면서 양적·질적인 면에서 본격 적으로 활발해졌다. 그러나 교재 평가와 교재 개선 등을 위해 무엇보다 도 중요한 교재 분석의 전반적인 원칙과 틀에 대한 연구가 아직 없었 기 때문에, 교재 연구는 교재에 관한 전체 모습을 조망하지 못하고 있 으며 교재 생산도 부분적인 면을 다룬 연구에 의존해 이루어지고 있다. 이 글에서는 이러한 문제 의식을 가지고 교재와 교재 분석의 전반적 인 모습, 한국어 교재 분석의 기준 등을 논하고 국내 공식 교육기관의 대표적인 예라고 할 수 있는 대학 부설 한국어 교육기관에서 1990년대 에 사용중인 교재를 교실 수업 관련 기준으로 간략하게 분석해 보았다. 그 결과 각각의 교재들에서 나름대로의 장점이 보였지만, 아직 개선해 야 할 점이 많은 것으로 나타났다. 한국어 교재의 질을 개선하는 것은 바로 한국어 교육의 수준을 한 차원 높이는 일이다. 그리고 이를 위해서는 교재 생산에 방향을 제공할 수 있는 교재 연구가 꾸준히 이루어져야 하며, 무엇보다도 교재의 현재 모습을 보여 주는 교재 분석 연구가 꾸준하게 지속되어야 한다. < A b s trac t > T he st andards for KFL tex tbook analy sis : a res earch and it s application JIN , D ae - Y e on T he history of teaching Korean as a foreign lan guag e mu st hav e begun at the tim e when th e Korean started to communicate with oth er nation s .
