Abstract
This study aimed at showing the need of reforming the model based on the theory by Brooks and Warren(1943) which has been commonly used for teaching viewpoint-narration in literature education. The existing Brooks and Warren's model has some limitation in explaining current novels which seem very complicated in viewpoint- narration. However, the current model of literature education is mainly based on Brooks and Warren's model. Thus, in the present study, an alternative was suggested for overcoming the limitations by reviewing the existing studies and then classifying them into viewpoint-narration of narrator, viewpoint-narration of character and viewpoint-narration of first-person.It was found that it is difficult to restrict viewpoint-narration models to several types, thus it is needed to associate the viewpoint-narration theory with specific novels. There are three suggestions for this: first, it is needed to separately teach the two notions ‘viewpoint’ and ‘narration’ by adopting the focalization model, second, it is needed to use more common materials such as films and cartoons for helping students more clearly understand the two notions, and finally a replacing activity where students change viewpoint-narration in a original literature with a different model would be very helpful to understand the function of viewpoint-narration.
