Abstract
The purposes of the study is to suggest ‘literacy of old people’ as a novel literacy and propose a way of method of its extension through the review of its necessity and approaching methodology centering on the societal change of Korea into a super aging society. ‘Literacy of old people’ denotes the competence of understanding information and expression on a specific age group which has noticeable symptoms of physical aging. And, in the sense, ‘information’ includes every kinds of symbolic expression. ‘Communication, treatment, and coexistence’ shows three orientations of approach toward ‘literacy of old age’. On the functional perspective, focusing on ‘communication’ its characteristics and structures can be structurally analyzed. ‘Literacy of old age as treatment’ embodies literacy which promotes emotional sympathy and self-reflection through the medium of literary works as well as literary as a way of information processing. In the final chapter of the study educational problems will be addressed to suit ‘coexistence’ by the expansion of fruitfulness of ‘communication’ and ‘treatment’.
