A Study on Length Errors of Chinese Learners of Korean —Centered on Beginning Level Leaners at Shanghai

Abstract
In this paper, we aim to analyze and to interpret the length errors of Korean words for Chinese beginning level learners’ in KFL. We analyzed 2,283 syllables those were collected from 3 minutes speeches which were performed by 12 freshmen at a university located in Shanghai. Their length errors are classified into 4 types, those are (1) error pronouncing the first syllable as long sound, (2) the first syllable as short sound, (3) non-first syllable as long sound, and (2)+(3). Learners made pronunciation errors of 919 syllables among 2,283 syllables . That is 40.30%. From error type (1) to (4), the percentages of error are 18.50%, 36.80%, 35.50% and 7.80%. We compare high frequence words with each Chinese word which has same meaning and similar sound. We observed 4 types of error pronouncing way. Two of them are pronouncing a syllable long or short without tone. The rest are pronouncing a syllable long or short with second or fourth Chinese tone. Based on our analyses, we can make 4 interpretations about the length error. First, the learners prefer short pronunciations to long pronunciations. Second, the pronunciation of Chinese word do not effect on the pronunciation of each Korean word which has same meaning and similar sound. Third, when learners pronounce a syllable long with consideration, they pretend to pronounce it with a rhythm similar to Chinese second tone. The last, a regular rhythm of all words in error type (3) is a influence of Chinese tone.
