A Study of the Concept of ‘Validity’ and ‘Appropriateness’ in the Korean Language Curriculum — Using Semantic Network Analysis

Abstract
This study explores the concepts and uses of ‘validity’ and ‘appropriateness’ in the Korean language curriculum, through a review of the underlying theory of each term, a semantic network analysis. It was confirmed that validity is mainly refers to a uniformly agreed concept of “a requirement for the establishment of assertions and grounds of persuasive discourse texts, a criterion for evaluating them, and property of discourse texts that learners judge and evaluate for critical understanding and persuasive expression.” In addition, ‘appropriateness’ and ‘appropriate’ were combined with various vocabularies with high affinity with the communication context, forming the concept of appropriateness in layers. The two terms shared some meanings and co-appeared. Nevertheless, it is stated confusingly within the Korean language curriculum. In the future, a clear concept of the two terms should be established and the curriculum should be stated. Based on the research results, a follow-up discussion was suggested.
