한국어 색채어는 한민족의 오랜 전통 문화를 반영하여 매우 정밀하 고 미묘하게 발달하였다. 색채 표현의 복잡성은 발화자의 느낌과 태도 를 효과적으로 표현하는 데 적합한 한국어의 중요한 특성을 이룬다. 한국어 색채어가 체계적이고 복잡하게 발달하였음에도 불구하고 지 금까지 이를 과학적으로 밝혀보려는 노력의 결과는 미미하였다. 이에 필자는 한국어 색채어가 지니는 표현 가치가 무엇인지를 밝히는 노력 의 일환으로 한국어 색채어의 표색 체계를 연구하였다. 한국어 색채어의 특성과 표현 가치를 밝혀내기 위해서는 모어 화자 가 직관적으로 사용하고 있는 색채어의 지식을 명확하게 기술하고 이 를 토대로 색채어의 상호 관계를 파악해 가는 작업이 필요하다. 필자 는 한국어 색채어의 색상 스펙트럼을 밝히기 위해 색채의 대립 관계와 혼색 표현을 조사하였다. 또한 한국어 색채어의 표색 기능을 객관적으 로 기술하기 위하여 60명의 모어 화자를 대상으로 - 앟/ 엏- 형 및 새/ 시- 형 파생 색채어 26개의 색채 대상물을 설문 조사하였다. 연구 결과 한국어 색채어의 표색 체계와 표현 가치에 대하여 밝혀진 사실은 다음과 같다. 한국어 색채어의 기본 표색 공간 - 앟/ 엏- 형 및 새/ 시- 형 파생 색채어의 초점 색채 - 앟/ 엏- 형 및 새/ 시- 형 파생 색채어 간의 상대적 표색 기능 표색 기능의 기본 대립 자질, 즉 밝음 ↔ 어두움, 옅음 ↔ 짙음 이와 아울러 한국어 색채어는 표색 가치만으로는 정확하게 변별되지 않는 경우가 있다는 점을 확인하기도 하였다. < A b atract > A bout colour repres ent ation sy stem of Korean colour term s Um , Hoon Korean colour term s hav e been dev elopped delicately in the long history of traditional culture.
