How do the Korean Teachers Recognize the Free Semester Operation and the Communication Activity

Abstract
This study investigated the Korean teachers in charge of the free semester on the issues related with the Korean teaching-learning lessons. In addition, it also investigated how the teachers recognize speech communication activities during free semester period. The result shows that during Korean classes as a subject, more time is spent on the career-related activities than on the inter-disciplinary convergence activities. For free semester activities, more time is spent on the activity related to Korean subject, rather than inter-subject convergence activities. Furthermore, Korean teachers evaluate that, due to the free semester, students are given increased opportunity for communication, have improved communication competence, and feel the necessity of learning communication skills. To compare the teachers’ response with that of the learners (Jeon, 2017), significant differences were noted in terms of increased opportunity for interviewing, and improved capacity of debate, discussion, interview and conversation. Besides, the teachers’ recognition on the student’s response to the difficulties and problems encountered during communication was remarkably different from the responses by the students themselves in the fields of debate, discussion, presentation and conversation. The present study proposed a way to improvement for the Korean classes in terms of contents, method, and assessment speech communication education.
