Modification of Text in Korean Textbooks

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the modification in Chinese textbooks. Based on the findings, vocabulary at a higher grade than learner’ level was deleted and replaced with lower grade vocabulary. This is a limitation that cannot maintain the content necessary for language learning. Therefore, it is necessary to select an appropriate method considering the level of learners and the necessity of teaching and learning difficult vocabulary. In the terms of sentences, the length of sentences was shortened by combining the sentences and deleting short sentences that were similar in meaning. In addition, when the sentence structure was complicated, it was modified to reduce the qualifier, replace the compound sentence with a short sentence, and replace the difficult grammar item with an easier grammar item. With regard to the text structure, modifications were made to add connection adverbs, add closing paragraphs, replace specific nouns, and add directive pronouns. When adding the finishing paragraphs, it is necessary to consider the text style. In terms of the text content, deleting some content that is irrelevant to the unit’s topic, deleting some examples, clarifying sentence content, rewriting difficult content to make it easier, adding sentences that describe previous content, adding examples, and replacing difficult examples with easy ones shoule be considered. It is important to note that when deleting or supplementing text content, it is likely to undermine the text coherence. Therefore, it is necessary to consider text coherence when modifying text content by deleting or supplementing some text.
